4/24/02 - Scholarship at KSU-Salina commemorates late English professor
The Grindell family, Manhattan, Kan., and friends have made a gift of $10,310 to the Kansas State University Foundation to establish the Robert M. Grindell Memorial Scholarship.

The purpose of the scholarship is to perpetuate the memory of Robert M. Grindell and provide financial assistance to a qualifying junior or senior enrolled in aviation maintenance at the College of Technology and Aviation at Kansas State University in Salina.

Grindell was a department head and professor in the English department for many years at Kansas State University. He earned a bachelorÕs degree in English from Harvard University in 1956, a masterÕs degree in English from New York University in 1964 and a doctorate in English from the University of Arizona in 1972. He retired from K-State in 1993 and died in 2000.

ÒDr. GrindellÕs love of aviation started early in his life when he was building and flying gas-powered model aircraft,Ó said Marlon Johnston, head of the Department of Aviation, K-State-Salina. ÒWith this scholarship gift, his passion for aviation will be passed to a new generation - our aviation maintenance students - as they learn the skills to build and maintain the airplanes we see all across the skies of Kansas. ThatÕs quite a legacy to leave.Ó
