K-STATE STUDENTS PLAN FOR NATIONAL FLIGHT COMPETITION

Tuesday, February 15, 2005

SALINA – Vice president of conference for the 2005 SAFECON – Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference – Nancy Milleret and vice president of competition Evelyn Ross have been working diligently for almost a year to make the National Intercollegiate Flying Association competition take flight.

The weeklong event will be held at Kansas State University at Salina, April 26-30, and will have more than 30 collegiate aviation teams from across the country competing.

Planning for the 2005 SAFECON began a year ago when it was announced that K-State at Salina would be the host school. Milleret and Ross spent nine days with K-State’s flight team at the 2004 national competition in Tennessee to better understand the scope of their duties for the time when their turn would come.

Since then, Milleret and Ross, along with NIFA president Heath Larson, secretary Brian Youngers and treasurer Scott Bryant have had to work out the details involved in putting on an event to be attended by 400 students – everything from planning social events to purchasing trophies, finding space for the competition and securing private donations to pay for it all.

Milleret said that the most rewarding part of the work is watching everything come together.

“I'd like to see the students, coaches and judges enjoy the events I've planned and be impressed with how smoothly the competition went,” she said.

She added, “Hosting SAFECON is more than five dedicated students can handle and the committee is grateful for all the help it will be receiving from K-State at Salina students.”

Students on the SAFECON planning committee are Brian Youngers, senior in airway science, Clearwater; Nancy Milleret, senior in airway science, Linwood; Heath Larson, senior in airway science, Marquette; Scott Bryant, senior in airway science, Washington; Evelyn Ross, senior in airway science, Winfield.
