K-STATE–SALINA OPEN HOUSE TO FEATURE WELD-A-THON AND FLY-IN

March 31, 2004

SALINA – Campus and academic life will come alive for the annual Open House at K-State–Salina. With activities for families and all ages, the day offers a wide variety of fun, free activities showcasing the College of Technology and Aviation. The event is free and open to the public, Saturday, April 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

One of the special events this year is the second annual weld-a-thon for charity, said Kathy Brockway, a professor and one of the project’s coordinators. Proceeds will benefit a fund for Steven Lawson, a Salina area boy who has battled critical illness and recently received a liver transplant. Lawson’s father is a graduate from the college’s aviation maintenance program.

“ The weld-a-thon has become an opportunity to do something to help our community,” Brockway said. “We have collected pledges to benefit a good cause, and having it help a family like the Lawsons means a lot to all of us.”

The aviation department will be sponsoring the first-ever Wildcat Fly-In that day, as well. This event is expected to draw pilots and aviation enthusiasts from around the region and will feature a pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Pilots flying in will receive a complimentary breakfast; others may purchase a ticket at the door for $5.

Open House also includes dozens of demonstrations, events and hands-on activities that take place across the campus. Here is a sample from the schedule:

• “Fly” in airplane simulators
• Shoot student-built water balloon cannons
• Compete in a LAN computer gaming party
• Try out chemistry and physics experiments
• Explore K-State’s airplane training fleet up close
• Get free purple K-State ice cream
• See how many students fit in a Cessna 150

“ Open House is a tradition for the entire Kansas State University system,” said Dennis Kuhlman, dean of the College of Technology and Aviation. “This year’s event should be a great time for anyone to come out, see some purple pride and enjoy some fun, free activities for the whole family.”
