K-STATE AT SALINA CHAPTER NAMED ROOKIE OF THE YEAR IN BUSINESS COMPETITION April 14, 2004 SALINA – Kansas State University at Salina’s newly formed chapter of Students in Free Enterprise was named Rookie Chapter of the Year at the organization’s regional competition in Denver, April 4-6. The award recognized the club’s first year of activities, as well as their competition presentation. “ We were so pleased with the team’s performance and participation in their first competition,” said Kathy Brockway, assistant professor in arts, science and business, and one of the chapter’s advisers. “With students from many of our college’s different disciplines, it gave our team a great pool of strengths and skills to draw from.” SIFE is an international organization made up of teams from 1600 college and university campuses in 40 countries. The group works to foster leadership, teamwork and communication skills through learning, practicing and teaching the principles of free enterprise. Teams work in topics that include market economics, entrepreneurship, personal and financial success and business ethics. Brockway and Greg Spaulding, the K-State at Salina chapter advisers, each also received Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellowships. Spaulding is an associate professor in mechanical engineering technology. Team members traveling to the competition were Susie Green, Assaria, freshman in applied technologies and Web development technology; Brian Youngers, Haysville, junior in professional pilot; Paul Hendrickson, Jetmore, senior in mechanical engineering technology; Chris Young, Leawood, freshman in professional pilot; Chris Laws, Leoti, junior in professional pilot, technology management and business; Josh Koch, Madison, junior in mechanical engineering technology; Amanda Brady, Salina, freshman in technology management and Web development technology; Paul Homan, Topeka, senior in mechanical engineering technology; and Nic Colgrove, Washington, junior in computer systems technology and Web development technology.
