NATIONAL DEPRESSION SCREENING DAY COMES TO K-STATE SALINA October 5 , 2004 SALINA – Kansas State University at Salina will sponsor depression screening from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 7 in the K-State at Salina Technology Center lobby. The screening will be free and completely anonymous, confidential and open to all students, staff and faculty. The program’s goal is to screen 100 people; there will be give-aways for participants. Shana Meyer, assistant director of college advancement for student life, said that National Depression Screening Day is especially appropriate for a college campus because college students are as likely to develop depression as any other age group, sometimes even more so. She added that this problem can be compounded by the fact that students are often away from their usual support network – family and close friends – for the first time in their lives. “Students need to understand that depression and anxiety are not character flaws or personal weaknesses. They are illnesses that are highly responsive to treatment. If you have not been feeling like yourself lately you are encouraged to participate in the free, anonymous screening,” said Shana Meyer.
