K-STATE SALINA STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AT ENGINEERING LEADERSHIP EVENT

November 19, 2003

SALINA – A Kansas State University Society of Manufacturing Engineers club took top honors in several events at the SME Region 10 Chapter Officers Conference, Oct. 24-25, at Lake Ozark, Mo. The club is made up of students in the mechanical engineering technology program in the College of Technology and Aviation, located on the Salina campus.

Diane Haynes, senior in technology management, placed first in the regional job interview competition. The group’s table top display also won first place with a magic show theme where students demonstrated several chemistry “tricks,” including making nylon, observing unusual properties of cornstarch, disappearing water and shape memory alloy applications.

The chapter delegation also took second place in technical report presentation. In this competition, student chapters presented a summary report focusing on various chapter activities of the past year, as well as campus clubs and projects. Students are evaluated on presentation skills, as well as student club activities in promoting SME.

Student members were joined by chapter advisers Raju Dandu and Julia Morse, both associate professors of mechanical engineering technology. During the conference members of the delegation also attended leadership training and a technical workshop.

Students representing the K-State – Salina SME chapter were Haynes; Paul Homan, junior in mechanical engineering technology; Alan McQueen, junior in mechanical engineering technology; Karl Bergstrom, junior in mechanical engineering technology; Josh Koch, sophomore in mechanical engineering technology; and Andy Weber, junior in mechanical engineering technology.
