NETworked
Residents On Campus at K-State
at Salina Before your computer will work on the network you must complete and submit the form entitled "Application for Dorm Network Connection" to the Office of Information Systems. Although nearly any operating system that runs on a personal computer may be used, the large majority of residents select a computer running one of Microsoft's operating systems: Windows ME, Windows 2000 or XP. The reasons for this choice are operating system compatibility with available software, a wide range of hardware support, and many sources for advice, support and troubleshooting. Regardless of operating system type, the TCP/IP configuration should be done through DHCP. DHCP is a configuration protocol that automatically sets all necessary TCP/IP configurations. Each user running Windows must configure their system to be a member of the RESHALLS Workgroup (instructions are on the application form). University policy requires all computers on the network to have the current version of anti-virus software, operating system patches and service packs. The required anti-virus software will be provided when registering for your network connection. For Windows patches and service packs go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Each user account on each computer must have a secure password to obstruct virus attacks. Residents
are not allowed to install wireless access points, or Ethernet hubs/switches/routers,
and are strongly discouraged from using the unnecessary NETBEUI and IPX/SPX
network protocols. University policy prohibits the use of Napster, WAREZ,
and similar point-to-point file distribution/sharing software. Computer labs in the residence halls provide access to several resources on the network including laser printing and software applications such as Microsoft Office, MathCAD, AutoCAD and numerous utilities that facilitate use of the Internet. Network/Internet connections in the rooms are provided by K-State at Salina at no cost to the residents. In order to maintain this free service it is necessary that the above regulations and the university policies at http://www.k-state.edu/vpast/itpolicies/ be followed. Individuals failing to do so will lose the use of the network/Internet connection in their room. If you have forgotten or have never used your eID, or have forgotten your eID password, you must first activate (or reactivate) your account at http://eid.k-state.edu. Be sure to keep your K-State eID information in a safe place. Note the password exactly - it is case sensitive. Activation of your eID takes approximately 30 minutes. For help with your eID, come to the Salina campus ID Center located in TAC 103. (Same building where Parking, Security, Continuing Ed are) Users with any questions about information on this page should contact Office of Information Systems, Technology Center 184. |
