Wireless Networking - How to configure WPA

K-State at Salina offers Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) secured connections in order to provide more secure wireless communications. In order to connect using WPA on the Salina network you will need:

  • A wireless client that supports WPA (eg. Windows XP, Windows Vista, Linux)
  • A wireless client that supports EAP-TTLS
  • An active K-State eID and eID password

If you are using wireless client software that supports WPA with EAP-TTLS you can skip ahead to the summarized WPA settings. The default clients included on Windows XP/Vista support WPA but don't include support for EAP-TTLS. If you are using the default Windows wireless software you will need to install the SecureW2 EAP-TTLS add-on in order to connect to the Salina network using WPA.

I. Install the SecureW2 EAP-TTLS add-on (if needed)

The default wireless client included with Windows XP/Vista does not include support for EAP-TTLS. If you are using the default Windows XP/Vista client or your wireless client software does not include support for EAP-TTLS you will need to install the SecureW2 client:

  1. Download and run the SecureW2 Installer for Windows.

  2. Use the default options listed on the installation screens.

  3. After installation finishes you may need to restart your computer.

II. Configure a connection in your wireless client

The following settings are needed to connect to K-State at Salina's secure wireless network. You will need to configure these settings in your client (an example for doing this in Windows XP is listed below):

WPA Settings (summarized)
Network name/SSIDk-state.wpa
Network AuthenticationWPA or WPA-Enterprise
Data Encryption (if specified)TKIP
EAP method/typeTTLS (or SecureW2 EAP-TTLS if using the SecureW2 add-on)
Inner EAP methodPAP
Validate server certificateyes
Server certificate / Trusted Root CAIPS SERVIDORES

III. Use your K-State eID and eID password to connect

When you connect to the K-State at Salina network using WPA you will be prompted for a username and password. In order to connect you will need to use your eID and eID password.

Example 2: Configure a Broadcom wireless client

NOTE: The Broadcom client is sometimes installed with Broadcom wireless network cards. There are many other wireless network clients. K-State does not formally support the Broadcom client (or any other client) - this example is only listed here to provide an additional reference.
