STUDENT EMPLOYMENT

Employment Requirements

A variety of student employment opportunities are available with the Recreation Center. Positions are filled by students who are currently enrolled at Kansas State University. Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours during the fall or spring semester. For summer employment, a student must (1) have been enrolled in no fewer than 6 hours in the past spring semester, or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no fewer than 6 hours, or (3) be enrolled in the summer semester for any number of credit hours, or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.

Incoming freshmen and transfer students are eligible to apply for positions before arriving on campus.  

Student hourly wages begin at $6.50 per hour or more, depending on the position. Employees are eligible for a salary increase each year, provided they have an above satisfactory work evaluation.

Positions

Recreation Assistants
Recreation Assistants the Recreation Coordinator in Recreation Center supervision and management. Responsibilities include opening/closing procedures, building security, checking student IDs and membership cards for admittance; sports equipment checkout, court preparation, injury treatment, policy enforcement; handling money transactions, laundry duties, and providing information to patrons and campus visitors.

Additional responsibilities include assisting and educating participants in the safe use of weights and cardiovascular equipment, safety, security, and policy enforcement of the weight/fitness area, equipment checkout, cleaning and troubleshooting, and reporting maintenance needs of the equipment. CPR certification will be required to complete within one month of hiring date.

Intramural Coordinator
The Intramural Coordinator is employed to supervise all team and individual intramural activities. Included in his or her responsibilities are game organization and administration, training and supervision of officials, safety, prevention and treatment of accidents, field preparation and take down, security of the area, equipment and personnel management, and facilitation of participants and the program. Experience in supervision of people activities, officiating, knowledge of game rules and intramural and Recreation Center policies are necessary and vital to successful performance. CPR, first aid, and blood-borne pathogens certifications are a requirement for the Intramural Coordinator. Preference is given to graduate students in sports management, seniors or recent graduates in the Kinesiology or sports management programs, or to a K-State or K-State at Salina student with related experience.  For more information on this position, please contact the Recreation Coordinator at 785-823-6594.

Intramural sports officials
Sports officials are employed in the following competitive intramural team sports: flag football, volleyball, basketball, softball. Experience is preferred, but not necessary.

Those interested need to have knowledge of the rules and procedures of the activity they wish to officiate. Clinics are provided to educate and review the rules, mechanics, and techniques necessary to officiate each activity. Conflict management skills, confidence, and quick decision-making skills are desirable qualities. Positions will be filled by those attending all training clinics. Dates and times of clinics and additional information are available in the Recreation Center office.  Preference will be given to K-State at Salina students who have experience playing team sports in high school, or have participated in intramural or team sports through any organization the year prior to hire. 

Fitness Specialists
K-State at Salina Wildcat Fitness Specialists have the unique opportunity to gain experience in a wide variety of fitness areas, including group fitness, personal training, and corporate fitness programs.  Fitness Specialists can participate in all areas, or pick the area they would like experience in leading.  Group fitness is a unique leadership opportunity to promote physical activity and well-being while learning how to lead and motivate students, faculty/staff and the general public to a stronger body.  The corporate fitness program at K-State at Salina will give Wildcat Fitness Specialists valuable experience learning about corporate fitness and injury prevention by working with the Recreation Coordinator and her corporate fitness clients.  Fitness Specialists can also gain experience in personal training, where they are able to connect with clients on an individual level, educating them on the importance of physical activity and overall wellness while conducting fitness assessments, weight room orientations, and developing training programs.  

Fitness Specialists do not have to be majoring in Kinesiology or a related field to become a Fitness Specialist at K-State at Salina.  To be eligible for this position, students need to complete the semester long in-house training, become nationally certified through ACE, ACSM, or AFAA, and hold a current CPR certification by a nationally recognized organization such as American Heart or American Red Cross.  Students need to be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at K-State or K-State at Salina.  Students from another university or college need to have a K-State at Salina approved semester or year-long practicum or internship from another university or college.  For more information about becoming a Fitness Specialist through K-State at Salina, please contact the Recreation Coordinator at 785-823-6594.
