Aggregate Field Tester

The CIT Program provides the following methods for obtaining certification.

1. Aggregate Field Course

Course options include:

Online course - course is online and available upon registration. The course is available to you year round with the course period designated in your registration confirmation email and the CanvasPro course page. You must complete the course and subsequent exam(s) by the stated completion date in your confirmation email and in CanvasPro. Written and performance exams are administered in Salina, KS.

In Person course - three day course instructed in Salina, KS and written and performance exams are administered on the last day.

Prerequisite: Pass Basic Math test prior to enrolling for the course.

2. Aggregate Field Exam with IA Witness

This option is for individuals who have been IA witnessed and only need to take the written exam. You must submit the witness form indicating that KT-1, KT-2, KT-3, KT-11 & KT-50 have been witnessed. This form can be submitted upon registering. The written exam is administered online at the student’s location and requires a supervisor or supervisor approved proctor.

Course Description

This course is required by the Kansas Department of Transportation for persons involved with aggregate field testing.

Rick Barezinsky, PE

Rick is the Assistant Bureau Chief of Construction and Materials with the Kansas DOT where he develops, directs and coordinates the activities of Pavement Management, the Regional Labs, Specification Development, and reviews and modifies Test Procedures. He has worked for KDOT for 28 years. His previous positions include: Pavement Engineer, Field Materials Engineer, and the District One Construction and Materials Engineer. He is Kansas’ voting member for AASHTO Committee on Materials and Pavements. He worked 2.5 years with the Missouri-Kansas Chapter of the American Concrete Pavement Association as the Design Engineer. Prior to his career with KDOT, Rick served as a Civil Engineering Officer in the United States Air Force. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Ohio University and is a Registered Professional Engineer in Kansas and Missouri. Rick and his wife, Karen, have been married for 38 years and they enjoy spending time with family and friends.

  • Test fine material by washing.
  • Determine moisture content by drying.
  • Determine particle size by a sieve analysis.
  • Test uncompacted void content of fine and coarse aggregates.

Testing Information

  • Exam: The class and quiz out options require a written exam and a performance exam. The exam with IA Witness option requires a written exam.
  • Score: A score of 60% on each portion of the written exam plus a 70% overall score is required to pass the exam. Failure on any part of the written exam requires a full retest. If three or less performance sub tests are failed, only the sub test failed must be retaken. If four or more sub tests are failed, all performance sub tests must be retaken.
