The CIT Program provides the following methods for obtaining certification.

1. Quarry Monitor Course and Exam

Online course with exam included - course and exam are online and access is available upon registration. The course is available year round with the course period designated in your registration confirmation email and the CanvasPro course page. You must complete the course and subsequent exam(s) by the stated completion date in your confirmation email and in CanvasPro. This option is required for initial certification. The written exam can be taken and submitted one time. It can be taken at the student’s location and requires an approved proctor. Registration is necessary if a retake is needed.
Prerequisite: Pass Basic Math test prior to enrolling for the online course.

Course Objective:

This course is required for Kansas Department of Transportation employees who are performing the work of the Quarry Monitor position and others interested in learning about the Aggregate Sampling and Testing program. The overall goal of this class is to provide a broad overview of the Aggregate Sampling and Testing program at KDOT.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn the Geology of Kansas
  • Learn the importance of how Geology relates to the Aggregate Sampling and Testing program
  • Learn how Geology relates to aggregate production and processing
  • Learn the importance of the program to the performance of aggregate used at KDOT for construction projects

Christopher Leibrock - Assistant Bureau Chief Materials - Lab, KDOT

Chris has been working at KDOT for 5 years to provide oversight of the central laboratory. He supervises multiple employees including Engineering Technicians, Professional Engineers, and Chemists. He provides oversight and management of the testing program, accreditation program and the testing equipment. He also teaches for the KDOT CIT program by teaching multiple classes on materials and testing for KDOT. He provides extensive oversight of materials approval and prequalification programs within KDOT, specifically, approvals of aggregate sources including the oversight of testing and specifications. In addition, volunteers as a national representative for KDOT on the AASHTO Committee of Materials and Pavements as a vice chair of technical committee TS-4e and voting member of multiple other technical committees. He is also a voting member for KDOT on the National Transportation Product Evaluation Program.

Kyle Halverson - Chief Geologist

Kyle has been with KDOT since 2008. In 2016 he was promoted to Chief Geologist where he oversee Professional Geologist and Engineering Technicians within the KDOT Geology Section. Kyle’s principal duty is to provide geology recommendations and construction guidance on KDOT projects. In his time at KDOT he has taught various KDOT CIT courses, such as: Quarry Monitor Inspection, Driven Pile Inspection, and Drill Shaft Inspection. As part of the KDOT Geology Section, Kyle like many others in that section are diverse in design recommendations and construction practices. The Geology Section is one of only a few sections within KDOT that participate in all phases of a project, from preliminary design through construction. Additionally, Kyle participates in many national organizations and Committees. He holds leadership positions on the Highway Geology Symposium, Shallow Exploration Drillers Clinic and TRB Committee on Soil Properties and Geotechnical Site Characterization.

Jason Brown, Quarry Monitor Mentor

Jason has been working at KDOT for 29 years, mostly in the District 5 materials lab. He was the District 5 quarry monitor for just over 20 years before being assigned to the mentor position. He provides support and training for the KDOT quarry monitors located across the state.

Testing Information:

  • Exam: This course requires a written exam.
  • Score: A score of 70% or higher is needed to pass.
