Trauma Treatment in the Family
Treating trauma requires helping professionals to consider how to treat the entire family. Dr. Scott Sells will lead two separate trainings on this topic. Attendees may participate in one or both trainings to further their knowledge on trauma treatment.
Treating the Traumatized Child and Family
Youth are often referred to therapy because of an overt behavior problem – acting out, shutting down, skipping school, self-harm, aggression, running away – not the underlying trauma and unhealthy family dynamics that are the real cause of the problem. And while you can make some progress individually, lasting change is unlikely when the child returns to the same unhealthy dynamic at home. Trauma affects the entire family – shouldn’t treatment do the same?

- Keep session work focused, strategic, and solution-oriented
- Empower caregivers to improve boundaries, attachment, discipline and communication
- Overcome the most common treatment roadblocks that frustrate you and your client
How to Motivate and Engage the Extended Family
It takes a village to raise a child is an old African proverb. It means that a child needs both the immediate and extended family to overcome adverse experiences like trauma and to grow up in a safe and secure environment. If the family is involved, it is only those members of the immediate household living under the same roof. The extended family of friends, ex-spouses, relatives, or institutions are rarely engaged or actively involved. And if they are, their roles and function are not well defined. Therefore, the key questions are: “Why does this happen?” and “How do we overcome this problem?”
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Learn the top reasons why mental health counselors did not engage the extended family but tend to treat just the individual or immediate family who walks through the door.
- Learn the MI Extended Family Phone Call Question to quickly engage and locate your family's extended family or village as well as who is supportive and non-supportive.
- Learn how to adapt and implement the MI Extended Family Phone Call Question through an intensive case study that illustrates the positive impact of engaging both biological and step-parents.
Attendees may use these courses to receive up to 3 CEU hours (1.5 CEU hours for each session). K-State Polytechnic is a pre-approved continuing education provider approved by the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board. Provider number 15-005.

About the instructor
Scott P. Sells, Ph.D., LCSW, LMFT, AMFT

Dr. Scott Sells, creator of the Family Systems Trauma (FST) model, has been training professionals serving children and adolescents with severe emotional and behavioral problems for over 20 years. He specializes in working with impossible or stuck cases whose families have not been successful with other counselors.
Dr. Sells was a former Professor of Social Work at Savannah State University in Savannah, GA and Associate Professor at UNLV in Las Vegas, NV. He is the developer of the Parenting with Love and Limits® evidence-based treatment model which is used throughout the US and Europe.
Dr. Sells is the author of three best-selling books, Treating the Traumatized Child: A Step-by-Step Family Systems Approach (Springer, 2017), Parenting Your Out-of- Control Teenager: 7 Steps to Reestablish Authority and Reclaim Love (St. Martin’s Press, 2001), and Treating the Tough Adolescent: A Family-Based, Step-by-Step Guide (Guilford, 1998).

System Requirements
The online training software operates on any Mac or PC system. Your system must have speakers with sound enabled. You will need a microphone (webcam optional) to participate in the program. You will need an internet connection, broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE) is recommended.
You will need to download Zoom, a free video conferencing software to participate in the live activities. You can do this from the Zoom web site, or you will be prompted to download it prior to the program. Please review the Zoom system requirements.
