Social Work Wildcat Conference Call for Presenters

You are invited to apply to present a session at the 3rd Annual Social Work Wildcat Conference on October 23, 2023.

Sessions should educate participants on current trends, present challenges, and innovative solutions when it comes to meeting the needs of older adults. Sessions may include recent or pending changes in laws targeting older adults and how these might impact helping agencies, along with proven intervention methods that can be used when helping individuals and families with aging-related issues. Proposals that focus on ethical responsibilities, skill development, practical application, lessons learned/results, and data-driven strategies and programs are encouraged.

Interested presenters should complete the presenter application by April 26, 2023. All applicants will be contacted with the selection status.

Suggested workshop topics

Presentations could relate to one or more of the following suggested topics:

  • Ethical Considerations for Working with Older Adults: Advocacy, social and political action, ethical dilemmas faced by agencies and helping professionals providing direct services, etc. How legislation impacts social service providers’ ability to collaborate and/or address the needs of older adults. Provide resources for education on the ethics involved in working with older adults. (3-hour requirement)
  • Trends and local issues: Data trends related to older adults pressing needs, barriers to services, and available services within Kansas vs. nationwide. It can also include reviewing programs and policies specific to an agency or geographic area. (1 to 1.5 hours)
  • Grief and Grieving: Education on coping methods and understanding the unique dynamics and mental health considerations related to the various stages of life. (1 to 1.5 hours)
  • Abuse: Recognizing and addressing emotional, physical, financial, and sexualabuse experienced by dependent adults. (1 to 1.5 hours)
  • Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders: Explore emotional health and/or addiction trends among older adults, in addition to recommended interventions. (1 to 1.5 hours if presentation would qualify for general CEUs or 3 hours if presentation would qualify for diagnosis and treatment CEUs)
  • Supporting Family Caregivers: Identify and address the unique needs and caregiving realities. Describe the experiences and challenges faced by family caregivers. (1 to 1.5 hours)
  • Sexuality and Aging: Help individuals understand how aging affects sexual health and how to advocate for positive sexual health in older adults. (1 to 1.5 hours)
  • Potential Barriers within Transitional Phases: Educate today’s helping professionals on the obstacles that cause challenges for adults and their caregivers related to navigating Medicare and supplemental policies, planning for retirement, gaining access to nursing homes and hospice care facilities that demonstrate best practices, and the ability to age in place. (1 to 1.5 hours)
