Pile Driving Inspection

The CIT Program provides the following methods for obtaining certification.

1. Pile Driving Inspection Course and Exam

Online course with exam included - course and exam are online and access is available upon registration. The course is available year round with the course period designated in your registration confirmation email and the CanvasPro course page. You must complete the course and subsequent exam(s) by the stated completion date in your confirmation email and in CanvasPro. This option is required for initial certification. The written exam can be taken and submitted one time. It can be taken at the student’s location and requires an approved proctor. Registration is necessary if a retake is needed.
Prerequisite: Pass the Basic Math exam and the Basic Inspection exam prior to taking the online course.

2. Pile Driving Inspection Recertification Exam

The recertification option allows a person to take the written exam for recertification without attending class. This option is recommended for individuals who have at least five years experience. The exam is online and available upon registration. The exam can be taken and submitted one time. It can be taken at the student’s location and requires an approved proctor. Registration is necessary if a retake is needed.

Prerequisite: Must hold a current Basic Inspection certification.

Course Description

This class is designed to provide KDOT Inspectors with the basic understanding of driven pile installation using KDOT specifications and practices. The class will introduce participants to the various aspects of pile driving, pile driving equipment and the use of the bearing formula and the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA).

It gives participants a background in the use, design and installation of driven piles used in KDOT bridges.

Instructors

Jason Kolb

Jason Kolb - Geologist

Jason is a Professional Geologist and alumnus of Kansas State University. He works with the Kansas Department of Transportation out of the El Dorado Regional Geology Office which covers the Southcentral and Southwestern parts of the state. He brings over 10 years of experience in providing pile driving recommendations for bridge sites and monitoring test pile drives with the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA). He loves God and his family.

John Barker

John Barker - Geologist

John Barker is a 2012 graduate of Emporia State Univeristy, where he earned his degree in Earth Science. He has worked as a geologist for the Kansas Department of Transportation since 2012 and has been the northeast Regional Geologist since 2016. Througout John’s career he has monitored numerous test piles with the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) and provided recommendations for projects across the state. In his free time, John enjoys camping and exploring the National Parks with his family.

Testing Information

  • Exam: This course requires a written exam.
